Rothschild family
   family of financiers, public figures
The French branch of the Rothschild family was founded in 1817 by Jacob Rothschild (1792-1868). He was the son of Meyer Rothschild (1743-1812), who started the family banking business in Frankfurt, Germany, whose other sons opened branches in London, Vienna, and Naples, while one continued the business in Germany. Jacob, at the Paris branch, was the banker to kings louis XV III, charles x, and louis-philippe and served as French consul in Austria. All five Rothschild brothers were ennobled (1816) and made barons (1822) by the Austrian emperor Francis II. The French branch of the family had considerable success. Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905), the son of Jacob, made Paris the center of the family business, served as regent of the Bank of France (1855), and greatly increased the family fortune. Gustave de Rothschild (1829-1911), Alphonse's brother and a partner in the business, served as Austro-Hungarian consul in Paris. Edmund de Rothschild (1845-1934), their brother, was the director of the Chemin de fer de l'Est for the French Railways. Edouard de Rothschild (1868-1949), the son of Alphonse and head of the French branch of the family upon the death of his father, played an important role in the early Zionist movement. Maurice de Rothschild (18611957), the son of Edmund, served as a senator from 1929 to 1945. Robert de Rothschild (18801946), in 1911, followed his father Gustave in the business. upon the death of Édouard, the directorship of the French branch of the Rothschild bank was given to his son Guy de Rothschild (b. 1909), and to two of Robert's sons, Alain (1910-82) and Élie (b. 1917).
